A Social Enterprise providing community based support for adults with learning disabilities and/or autism in the South West

Competition Winners!

You First has recently organised a competition where staff were invited to write, in 500 words or less, why they had chosen to work for a Social Enterprise supporting people with learning disabilities and/or autism.

There were 3 prizes up for grabs:

First Prize: A £40.00 voucher for a meal for two at the Kitchen at the Wharf, Langport. This was won by Michelle Doble (pictured left) who is a Support Worker.

Second Prize: A £20.00 voucher for a store of the winners choice won by Sam Ball-Shead (pictured right) Sam is a Team Manager with You First

Third Prize: A bottle of wine won by Jane Wilson (centre) who works as a Support Worker.

In order to demonstrate equality and impartiality the entries were judged by Christine Warner, Executive Director.

“Reading all the entries was an absolute joy. It was such an inspiring task as the passion and commitment of the staff shone through – I really enjoyed reading them all”

Christine Warner, Executive Director

The winners were invited to join You First’s Advisory Board where the winners were able to talk about what inspired their entry and what they enjoy about supporting people with learning disabilities and autism. The Advisory Board were impressed that the single message that came across was that people enjoyed seeing people become empowered and part of their local community.

Reflecting on Michelle’s winning entry Christine said:

“I chose Michelle as the winner as her poem truly reflected person-centred support. It was person led, not system led. From reading it I could picture the scene, a support worker actively supporting, empowering, encouraging, being alongside. It was terrific!”

Talking about her winning entry (pictured here) Michelle said:

“I have worked in social care for many years mostly in residential or supported living settings. Working for You First I have witnessed first hand how people with learning disabilities or autism can become empowered and live a life just like you and me, a life where they have their own home and enjoy their local community.”

This photo, together with a few others you will be seeing in the next few weeks was taken by Calum Brown. Calum uses his Personal Budget to purchase support from You First and has recently been presented with an award from Chard Camera Club.
