I chose to work as a Support Worker because I like helping people, especially vulnerable people.
I grew up with a brother who had been living with brain damage from the age of 3 and as a result of this my family had support throughout my childhood which was both invaluable and necessary. Living with and witnessing the support for my brother and our family inspired me to empower people with disabilities to live in the community.
I chose to join You First Support Services because I share the values the Social Enterprise holds towards empowering people to try to achieve anything regardless of their disabilities.
Since I've been working for You First I don't get the Monday morning Blues, as each day holds something new. It's a similar feeling to the one you get when your child says "Mummy" or "Daddy" for the first time or starts to walk by themselves. Obviously the people we support are adults, not children, however when someone achieves something, it might seem small to others, but to the individual concerned it's like reaching the top of Mount Everest. Sharing in that person's joy and excitement is wonderful; seeing people achieve these life goals also gives me a good feeling of my own achievements as I have played a part in supporting them to achieve their ambition.
