My journey to becoming a Support Worker has been a twisty and interesting one, to say the least.
I started my career as a Veterinary nurse, first in Cape Town, then in London, while studying Animal Behaviour. I then did a BA in Psychology whilst doing an 8 year stint in Corporate Risk Management, and although this involved helping people, I never felt fully fulfilled. Having lived with a toe in 2 countries for a few years we took the leap and headed back to the UK permanently, and at this point I found You First and their advert intrigued me. I applied for a role as Support Worker, and the interview piqued my interest further.
I started working for the Social Enterprise in July last year and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Every day is different, and challenges are met with understanding the persons needs, and adjusting to make their day a happy and fulfilled one. Getting to know each person, learning their way of communicating, and helping them live their best, most successful and enriched life has been a joy.
I feel like I have never made a difference like I have in the past few months, and it's been refreshing to have management who are as engaged, approachable and professional as at You First, something which sadly lacks in many organisations.
Seeing the people we support grow, develop, learn to trust and fulfil their goals has been a rewarding experience.
